“THEY JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND, Alonzo.” FDR said sadly as he was positioned in his plush bed in the upstairs residence in the White House. “If they could just see what I saw. Experience what I experienced.” FDR continued.

“Yessir.” Alonzo said.

FDR looked up at his caretaker with skepticism. “What’d you experience?”

Alonzo cocked his right eyebrow up. “You mean when I was under whatever spell that thing put me under?”

FDR nodded.

“The world’s biggest headache, sir.” Alonzo said earnestly. “Like one whale of a hangover!” The White House butler joked, eliciting a hearty belly laugh from the president. “So you say that little guy is a refugee?” Alonzo asked, his thoughts drifting to the strange being that they had kept for weeks under the White House.

FDR nodded. “I tell you, Alonzo, it sounds like the whole universe has gone made with war fever.” He said, the caustic images of the alien city being decimated by the strange reptilian ships flooding into his mind. “They were trying to tell me something about Bandit.” He said, clearly annoyed that he could not comprehend fully the message the aliens were trying to impart to him. “They were trying to warn me...or tell me...”

Alonzo finished tucking the tired president into his bed. “What’s that, Mr. President?”

FDR was frustrated. “I don’t know, Alonzo.”

“You were with his parents, though, in the memory?” Alonzo prompted.

FDR shrugged. “I really don’t know what they were to him. I sensed that they cared for—even probably—loved him. He was...” FDR shook his head.

“You said they came here because of you?” Alonzo asked, remembering what FDR had said when he had awoken downstairs.

FDR grinned sheepishly. “I tell you, Alonzo, I don’t think it was just a memory or some kind of living recording. I think I was actually there.” He said, sounding confused.

“How’s that possible?” Alonzo asked skeptically.

FDR thought about it for a long while. Perhaps these creatures could control time? The more FDR thought about that, the more frustrated he became. FDR threw his hands up in the air. “I really don’t know, Alonzo.”

Alonzo nodded sympathetically.

“I’ll tell you what: I don’t think they were planning to stay here.” FDR said.

“Oh?”

FDR nodded. “Their ship was damaged as it was fleeing. I think they came here to make repairs and then move on to somewhere else...”

“Do you know where?” Alonzo asked, genuinely interested in the prospect that there was more aliens out there.

FDR shook his head. “I got the sense that there was a big war going on and Bandit’s people were just caught in the middle. Like Poland today.” FDR elaborated, referring to the fact that Hitler’s aim was never to simply take over Poland. It was to use Poland as a stepping stone into a much more strategically valuable region of Europe. FDR thought of the reptilian alien he saw. “Their attackers, though, make the Nazis look like wall flowers.”

Alonzo’s eyes widened. “That’s pretty frightening, sir.”

FDR nodded. “And I tell you, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of them. I really don’t.”

Alonzo looked worried.
